| THE NEWS FOR THE WEEK OF December 3, 2007... | ||
| Provincial’s time Fr. Tom Cassidy is in Mississippi for the first part of this week. Please remember… Fr. Tony Kelly, who died December 2. He was 64 and a member of the Priests of the Sacred Heart since 1966; he was ordained in 1973. As most of you know, he had been struggling with cancer. Originally from Bangor, Maine, Fr. Tony did his undergraduate studies at Marquette University, Milwaukee (bachelor’s in sociology), and his theology at Sacred Heart School of Theology. He also studied at the Jesuit School in Weston, Mass., and at the School of Theology in Berkeley. When Fr. Kelly returned to Mississippi in 2006 to serve as pastor of Holy Spirit parish in Hernando, he said that he felt like he was “coming home.” Although away from the area for many years, it was in Mississippi where Fr. Kelly first began ministry. His first assignment was at Christ the King parish in Southaven (1976-78), followed by St. Gregory the Great in Senatobia (1978-81) and Sacred Heart in Walls (1982-86). In 1987, he headed south to Houston to serve at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish (1987-93). From 1993 to 2001 he ministered in South Dakota, first at St. Mary parish in Lower Brule and then at St. James parish in Chamberlain. From 2002-2005 he was a part of the ministerial team in Raymondville, Texas. And then, it was back to Mississippi. Returning, he said that he saw a lot of familiar faces from his first time in the area. “Some of them are people I baptized years ago and now THEY have children,” he said soon after settling in. Of his last assignment at Holy Spirit, he said that he enjoyed his parishioners because they have “ministries that reach out to the broader community as well as tending to the needs of parishioners.” Both province and local funeral arrangements will be in Mississippi. At the family’s request, Fr. Tony will be buried in Maine. Also, please remember Fr. Joseph Pozza, a member of the Franco-European Province, who died November 28. He was born in 1922, professed in 1943 and ordained in 1949. Forms, forms, forms Over the past couple of weeks, a number of SCJs have requested information and/or copies of documents concerning their funeral arrangements, living wills, durable power of attorney and legal wills regarding patrimony. It has been discovered that some of the forms need to be updated and revised because of changes in law or circumstances. With the assistance of Kathleen Dahlgren (province attorney), this process of reviewing and amending is underway. Br. Frank Presto hopes to have new forms mailed to members of the province by December 12. “I realize that these forms may not appear to be all that important during this busy season,” said Br. Frank. “However, that opinion is further from the truth than one might expect. Please complete the packet of forms and return them to the Provincialate Offices as soon as possible. These will be placed in your personnel file and the old ones destroyed. Your cooperation is most appreciated. Communications Congress The SCJs ESIC Business and Marketing School in Madrid, Spain, was host to two communications gatherings in November. The first, November 23-24, was open to the public and included presentations from journalism and marketing professionals regarding the media and the Church. The second was for SCJs and those who work with them in communications. Approximately 140 people attended the first session, and about 40 were in the second. Fr. Claudio Dalla Zuanna was the general councilor in-charge of the congress and Mary Gorski represented the U.S. Province. For more information about the gathering, please click HERE at Communications Congress. A few photos from the congress will be available at http://www.scjusa.smugmug.com. Click on the first gallery. Congrats! Congratulations to Joe Cannizzaro, a member of the kitchen staff at Sacred Heart Monastery/School of Theology. His recipe for Asian Cabbage Salad leads this year’s “Entertaining with Sodexho” cookbook. Sodexho is the food service agency that staffs the SHST/SHM kitchen. The book is published annually. XP please The Provincial Treasurer’s Offices requests that local treasurers (or anyone with whom the office directly works) NOT convert to the Vista operating system on computers that are used for financial work. The treasurer’s office has decided not to convert its financial software to the Vista format at this time. If financial work is done on a Vista operating system, most likely, the financial software will not be compatible with that of the Provincial Treasurer’s Office. If you have questions about this, please contact Dn. David Nagel, John Kuxhause or Kevin Stanke at the office. |
