Houston news
Fr. Rick DiLeo writes with a few news items from Houston:

“St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Our Lady of Guadalupe Parishes are in the midst of fund-raisers. First, SEAS had its annual event at the Farm and Ranch Club over the weekend. On May 19, OLG will have a Tejano Night Dinner Dance in the parish hall.

“With the academic year coming to a close, OLG School had its farewell Mass for the eighth graders with Fr. Tim Gray, OLG pastor, as presider. Of the 22 graduating eighth graders, 18 students are continuing their education through Catholic high schools.

“Both OLG and SEAS are having summer activities for children. OLG will have a program coordinated by Camp Innovation and SEAS will have Vacation Bible School in Spanish this year.”

Bishop says “hi!”
Fr. Paul Grizzelle Reid spoke with Bishop Joseph Potocnak over the weekend. The bishop said that he is doing well and that he is grateful for all the birthday wishes he received. He recently had a surprise visit from Frs. Charles Brown and Jan de Jong. “And the bishop adds his thanks for the continued support of the U.S. Province,” said Fr. Paul.

In the news
Fr. David Jackson recently had the following “Letter to the Editor” published in the Valley Morning Star (May 8)

“A certain phenomenon has captured my attention lately. Some of the most penetrating observations about occurrences in our society are coming from sportscasters.

“In analyzing and commenting on the Don Imus incident and his comments about the Rutgers University women’s basketball team, the Voice of the Herd on the local ESPN affiliate said, ‘The color that matters most in the U.S. right now is green.’

“On ‘The Dan Patrick Show,’ Keith Olbermann, commenting on the row that was caused by South Carolina’s football coach about removing the Rebel flag, also said that it is money that is driving sports. Amid all the commentary on these two events, I’ve found these insights to be the most penetrating.”

Mission intention
The Holy Father’s mission intention for the month of May: Seminary Teachers, that in mission territories there may be good and enlightened teachers for the major seminaries and institutions of consecrated life.

St. Joe’s receives tech funding
St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, SD, recently learned that it will receive $18,645 for telecommunications services and $9,419 for internet access through the federal government’s E-Rate program. E-Rate provides discounts to help schools and libraries pay for telecommunications services, internet access and internal connections so their students can use the best possible technology in the classroom.

“The E-Rate program is vital to assisting schools in paying for advances in technology and to free up local revenue for other important educational needs,” said South Dakota Senator Tim Johnson in announcing the award.
