Darfur
Fr. John Klingler shares the following: “I attended a demonstration for Darfur which took place November 11 at the Holocaust Memorial in Milwaukee; I am a member of the Dafur Action Coalition of Wisconsin. The demonstration was titled: ‘Milwaukee Dream for Darfur Torch Relay and Candlelight Vigil.’ The event was designed to draw attention to China’s support for the genocidal regime in Sudan. China gets 90 percent of its oil from Sudan.

“The Darfur Action Coalition of Wisconsin also is working to get the State of Wisconsin to divest from financial holdings in companies that do business with the Sudanese regime. In addition, it is part of a national campaign to encourage investment firms to withdraw investments from companies that help fund genocide in Dafur. Millions of Americans have their retirement funds in investment firms that are among the largest investors in Petro China.

Shelter approved
As we have reported in previous Fridge Notes, St. John the Evangelist parish, Green Bay, Wis., has been battling city hall in its attempts to keep open a winter homeless shelter. Fr. Guy Blair is pastor of the parish. On Thursday, the Green Bay City Council voted to approve the shelter with several conditions, one of which is that the diocese needs to seek a more permanent location outside of the city limits for the following winter. The night after the vote, the Green Bay mayor spent a night at the shelter. He said that it was the best way to answer lingering questions for area residents and council members about the site.

“I think if there’s a neighbor or a politician or anyone who would like to know more about who’s using this facility, I think a necessary step would be to experience it firsthand,” Mayor Jim Schmitt said in a Green Bay Press Gazette article.

To read more about the issue, go to the paper’s website at: www.greenbaypressgazette.com. If you search the archives you will find a variety of articles, include today’s story about the mayor’s visit.
