Thanks & greetings
Bishop Aloysius Sudarso of Palembang wrote the following to Fr. Tom Cassidy:
“I hope you and all the confreres are in good health and happiness as we enter the new year in the spirit of Christmas peace. Many greetings and prayers from Indonesia… I am very happy that through the generosity of the U.S. Province Fr. Ignasius Putera Setiahati, a diocesan priest for Palembang, will be able to study English for one year and then go on for his master’s degree in Education Management. I know that this costs a lot. I am also deeply touched that the U.S. Province is willing to help me with the funding of education for our seminarians for five years. It is a blessing for my diocese; I do not know how to thank you for these generous offers to our mission.

“I send my gratitude to you and the confreres for your kindness. I pray that God will bless all of your works and bless you for the wonderful help you have given to the diocese of Palembang.”

Bishop Sudarso is an SCJ who studied in the United States.

Happy birthday!
Those celebrating birthdays in February include: Dn. David Nagel (57) on Feb. 6, Fr. Paul Kelly (58) on Feb. 9, Frater Duy Nguyen (30) on Feb. 17, Fr. Quang Nguyen (43) on Feb. 18, Fr. Greg Murray (51) on Feb. 19, Fr. Mark Mastin (51) on Feb. 21, Fr. Tom Fix (75) on Feb. 22, Fridge Notes editor (45) on Feb. 23, Fr. Frank Clancy (75) on Feb. 25, and Fr. Peter Sanders (68) on Feb. 28.

Also, please note in the booklet Days of Celebration and Commemoration that on April 4, the “J. De Jong” listed is Fr. James De Jonge, a Canadian SCJ who died in 1996. The missing “e” has misled a few people into thinking that our own Fr. Jan de Jong left us in 1996. Fr. Jan has agreed, under the vow of obedience, to remain alive and well during his term as president-rector of Sacred Heart School of Theology (and we hope, many years after!).

From the archives
Fr. Wayne Jenkins, province archivist, shared news about some of the Archives’ recent displays. “For the 75th anniversary of Sacred Heart Monastery/School of Theology, Albert Dello Russo, an SHST seminarian from the Diocese of Palm Beach, lent the archives artifacts from his papal collection,” said Fr. Wayne. ‘For the first semester, two displays were created with papal artifacts from the anniversary years of 1932-2007.

“For this second semester, a display was created with artifacts from Pope Leo XIII, Pope Benedict XV and Pope Pius XI.” The focus on these popes is because of Fr. Dehon’s strong connection to them.

During Pope Leo XIII’s time, Fr. Dehon promoted the social teachings of Rerum Novarum. Under Pope Benedict XV, emphasis was placed on promoting consecration of families to the Sacred Heart; also, an altar was dedicated to the Sacred Heart in St. Peter’s Basilica. During the pontificate of Pius XI plans were finalized to dedicate a church in Rome to the Sacred Heart. This church, “Cristo Re,” was erected in 1926.

The display will be in the gallery area of the Provincialate Offices through the Provincial Chapter in June. Also, the revolving exhibit window in the Fr. John Emonts, SCJ, Museum (near the library at SHST) is worth visiting. On display have been memories from the Dominican Sisters of the Perpetual Rosary, winter scenes at the monastery, and liturgical life at the monastery.
