Welcome back!
Fr. Ed Kilianski returned to Houston at the end of February from his Spanish studies in Mexico. March 1, he assumes his new role as pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Later in the month, the parish will officially welcome him with a gathering sponsored by the Religious Education Department. Fr. Ed will jump immediately into the swing of things by celebrating Sunday Masses on March 2nd and attending Fund Raising Committee meetings. Fr. Rick DiLeo has been serving as administrator of the parish since January 1.

Other news in Houston: Br. Clay Diaz and Jose Estrada from the Chicago Formation Program will be spending their spring break with the SCJ community at OLG from March 9-15. They will be ministering at the parish and sharing in community with the SCJs in Houston.

Fr. Joseph Dinh continues his coursework and classes at Houston Graduate School of Theology. He is taking classes on Marriage and Family Life.

At home in Canada
As we noted last week, Fr. Gustave Lulendo of the Congolese Province recently joined the SCJ community in Ottawa. An alumnus of the ESL program at Sacred Heart School of Theology, Fr. Gustave is now a student at St. Paul’s University in Ottawa, where he is doing graduate work in ethics. [FYI: Frs. Peter Sanders and John van den Hengel have both taught at St. Paul’s for many years.] In February, Fr. Gustave introduced himself in an article in the Canadian Region’s newsletter, Canadian Informations. The following is excerpted from that article (the original was in French –– merci to Régis Corbin of the Montréal office for helping with the translation).

“I arrived on January 9 to a ground covered in snow,” wrote Fr. Gustave. “I thought that I was dressed well enough for the cold but I quickly had to put on my heavy parka before I got in the taxi that would take me to my new community. When I arrived, Fr. Herman Falke and Fr. John van den Hengel were there to welcome me and show me to my room. We talked about my studies at St. Paul as well as the possibility of further English study.

“My first contacts at the university were good, thanks to Fr. Peter Sanders. I am starting with two courses –– one in English and the other in French. In the mornings, I take English from 9 a.m. until noon.

“My transition to the new community has been good; there is a warm atmosphere among the SCJs here. The Canadian winter frightened me at first, but little by little I am getting used to it. I walk to St. Paul’s looking like an Eskimo bundled in my heavy parka.

“Given that the beginning announces the end, I can look at the future with much optimism. I am very happy with the community here and with my academic plan. I thank all those who have helped me, and will help me in the future. My experience here not only benefits me, but the Congolese Province.”

Upon completion of his studies, Fr. Gustave will teach in Congo.

Fr. Gustave is only one of many SCJs whom the Canadian Region has hosted from other countries. In future Fridge Notes we’ll share a bit about Fr. Aegidius Warsito, an Indonesia SCJ now ministering in Toronto, and Br. Dieudonne Tchouteau, an SCJ from Cameroon who has been a member of the Montréal community for the past several years.
